A COLD OR THE FLU?
A cold is caused by a virus that attacks the upper respiratory tract.  As the body attacks the virus we get the symptoms of a cold, including nasal congestion, sneezing and the sniffles.
Influenza for the flu is caused by one of several strains of the influenza virus.  These viruses usually cause symptoms in the head and chest, such as congestion, sore throat, or cough - but can also cause intestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.  The flu can also cause symptoms like fever, muscle aches. chills, or sweats.
Regular exercise boosts the immune system.  People who exercise may still catch a virus that causes a cold or the flu, but they may have less severe symptoms and may recover more quickly.  People who have allergies or asthma may already have inflamed irritated lungs so they are more likely to catch a virus like the flu or a cold.  Smokers are also more likely to have irritated lungs and are more likely to catch a virus.
The viruses that cause colds and flu are spread by droplet.  An infected person may pass the virus by coughing and sneezing.  In general, people need to have symptoms like a runny nose or cough in order to be contagious.
Children seem to catch colds more often than adults because they haven't had the opportunity to buld up immunity.  Children don't always have good hygiene either.  They forget to use a tissue, forget ot cover their mouth when coughing, and do not remember frequent hand washing.
When to go to a doctor
If you are sicker than usual, or have a high fever, or have other worrisome symptoms, call the doctor.  If you have a cold for more than 10 days and it isn't getting any better it may acutally be a sinus infection.  If you have itchy, watery eyes and sneezing without a fever, you may have an allergy instead of a cold.  Remember that your doctor knows best!
