What is the USDA Farmers for Families Food Box Program?
The USDA is partnering with farmers, ranchers, specialty crop producers, food processors and distributors, and non-profit organizations to ensure that all Americans have access to the fresh and wholesome food they need during the COVID-19 national emergency.
Where am I receiving produce from?
USDA boxes are being provided by James Desiderio Inc. of Buffalo, NY, a major food distributor of WNY (https://www.jamesdesiderio.com). Thank you to Adam Buzzard of Your Local Produce Connection for facilitating the distribution connection!
What kind of produce will I receive?
Each box of fresh USA produce weighs approximately 20 pounds. These boxes will include: 5 lbs. potatoes, 4 lbs. oranges, 3 lbs. apples, 3 lbs. onions, 3 lbs. green vegetable, 2 lbs. carrots. (Produce may vary each week.)
Who is eligible to receive USDA boxes?
All GVCS district residents are eligible for 1 box per family on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no financial prerequisites.
When and where is the produce being distributed?
Boxes will be distributed in a “drive-thru” fashion from 3:30-5:00 p.m. or until the food is gone. Follow the signs at the GVCS bus garage (1 Jaguar Drive Belmont, NY).
Will social distancing guidelines be in effect?
Yes. All residents must practice social distancing for everyone’s health and safety by remaining in their vehicles. Please follow the signs to guide you through the drive thru. GVCS Staff will load the produce boxes in cars on site.
